Yahoo Japan to Offer Internet Access Service
22 Jun 2001 15:58 UTC
The Japanese 1)subsidiary of Yahoo makes a leap into another Internet-related business, while game maker, Sega, is also expanding its 2)horizons.
Yahoo Japan, the country's leading 3)search engine, unveiled a plan to launch high-speed Internet access to compete with market leader NTT. The lightening fast 4)broadband service will 5)debut in Tokyo this month and expand nationwide in August. Yahoo Japan hopes it will boost revenue as online advertising falls.
Motoharu Sone, an information-technology analyst at Tsubasa Research Institute in Tokyo says Yahoo Japan will be successful for three reasons. He says that first, the cost to 6)subscribe is $19 a month, less than half of its rivals' fees. Secondly, the new service will soon be available in major areas. Finally, he says that Yahoo Japan already has a 7)loyal following of 20 million search engine users.
Japan's leading 8)cellular phone company, NTT DoCoMo, continues its aggressive overseas expansion strategy. It has lifted its 9)stake in KG Telecom of Taiwan by $56 million. It now owns more than 21 percent of the company. Through KG, DoCoMo will introduce its Internet accessible mobile phones. DoCoMo's move comes after its competitors announced similar deals in China.
Japan's Mitsubishi Electric unveiled a high flying plan with American 10)aerospace giant Boeing. Mitsubishi will use Boeing's new Delta rocket system for several satellite launches. They will also jointly manufacture satellites. The two firms have worked together on several projects in the last five years.
It's no longer just child's play for Game maker Sega. The firm plans to 11)diversify into electronic devices such as terminals for fast food restaurants, as well as the production of animated films. It has already linked up with five Japanese animation companies, which will use its new software. Sega is suffering from the failure of its Dreamcast game 12)console and a big fall in profits.
Seven-Eleven convenience stores across Japan are now offering more than soft drinks and magazines. A new online service available at in store terminals tells customers' fortunes. Each print-out costs about a $1.50 and the game is especially popular with young female customers.
